“LINCOLN DAY” and REPARATIONS IN VIRGINIA?!?!?!

Some of you may already know that SB43, a bill to add Lincoln to the State Holiday for Washington's birthday in Virginia was killed yesterday. This is good news!

However...

Senate Joint Resolution 131 has been introduced in lieu of Senate Bill 43. It will establish February 12 as “Lincoln Day” in the Commonwealth. It does not go to the Governor for approval, so there’s no amendment or veto. Once agreed to by House and Senate, it will be up to Senator Marsh’s committee, the Lincoln Society of Virginia, and others to request that the Governor create the appropriate proclamation and urge appropriate commemorations.

HB 527 Establishes the Virginia Slave Commission in the legislative branch of state government for the purpose of addressing contemporary political, economic, educational, and societal issues and public policies whose roots lie in the transatlantic slave trade.

The Commission, among other things, must (i) identify the vestiges and assess the effects of the transatlantic slave trade on African Americans, the Commonwealth, and modern societal problems and public policies, (ii) explore and showcase the contributions of African Americans in building Virginia and the nation, (iii) determine the educational and economic value to the Commonwealth of preserving sites and facilities of historic and archaeological significance to African American culture and contributions, and (iv) recommend feasible and appropriate options to resolve lingering societal problems whose roots lie in slavery. Notice the article flatly states that some Southern museums are cash-strapped because of the perception that their presentations are “one-sided – or even racist.” Notice also the “gee-it’s-too-bad-but what-can-you-expect” comments from Museum of the Confederacy CEO Waite Rawles and MOC Library Director John Coski (who of course is the author of the prim little volume “The Confederate Battle Flag: America’s Most Embattled Emblem.”) Notice finally the insights of PBS documentary guru Ken Burns, whose series “The Civil War” was “the most-watched public television series ever” – and as elaborate and slickly-packaged a piece of propaganda as has ever come down the pike. Burns makes the interesting comment that “We” – by which he apparently means the entire American public – “ceded the interest generally to the South, which is unusual, because it's usually the winners who write the history, not the losers." Burns apparently feels that heretofore the South has been allowed to have entirely too much to say about the war.

We ask all Flaggers to take to the streets and sidewalks of Lexington in protest of the Flag Ban passed by Lexington City Council on September 1st, 2011. We have a suggested route to follow, slightly altered from the original proposed parade route, which now covers 2.5 miles, and passes by the homes and businesses of many of those who dishonored Lee, Jackson, and our ancestors with their prejudicial ban. We hope that many of you will follow the route in small groups, at your leisure, and as you are able on the morning/afternoon of January 13th.

We had City, county and highway patrol cars one after another circled the block the whole time we were there. One, I think the chief of police?? sat in the window of Georgia Power watching us.

Mr. Mark Williams, "Georgia Power" was present in defense of Georgia Power Plant Wansley's actions concerning Yellow Dirt Baptist Cemetery.

In all fairness, Mark, was cordial but. He claimed Georgia Power Plant Wansley did the right thing by the Web brothers and that's all they would do. When I ask if an apologia was forth coming, he said no. I ask him as a man could he apologize to me, a Veteran, for the inaction of Georgia Power not doing the right thing.... His answer was no.

We could care less about the Web & Georgia Power property issue.... It's the law being enforced we now want as it appears they do not want to reason.

The time for protesting Georgia Power should now be over. Southern Legal Resource Center, The SCV and all our many heritage groups need to pursue legal action it this matter.

The bottom line is that the graves of American Veterans are sacred hallowed ground made such by their service to their country, and the placing of the flags are memorials to that service and honoring of their bravery and sacrifice for the rest of us. Both the graves, and the flags thereon are fully protected by full faith and force of law.

It's the law. We must pressure the legal system State and Federal to see the law is enforced!

Ain't we and our Southern heroes & flag been kicked around enough?!!

Confederate Veterans ARE United States Veterans under the eyes of US LAW:

Confederate Flags ARE protected under Georgia Law:
GEORGIA CODE 50-3-1(4) It shall be unlawful for any person, firm, corporation, or other entity acting without authority to mutilate, deface, defile, abuse contemptuously, relocate, remove, conceal, or obscure any privately owned monument, plaque, marker, or memorial which is dedicated to, honors, or recounts the military service of any past or present military personnel of this state, the United States of America or the several states thereof, or the Confederate States of America or the several states thereof. Any person or entity who suffers injury or damages as a result of a violation of this paragraph may bring an action individually or in a representative capacity against the person or persons committing such violations to seek injunctive relief and to recover general and exemplary damages sustained as a result of such person or persons unlawful actions.
50-3-9. It shall be unlawful for any person, firm, or corporation to mutilate, deface, defile, or abuse contemptuously the flag of the United States, the flag, coat of arms, or emblem of the State of Georgia, or the flag or emblem of the Confederate States of America by any act whatever.
50-3-10. Nothing in this article shall be construed to prevent the use of the flag of the United States or any flag, standard, color, shield, ensign, or other insignia of the State of Georgia or of the Confederate States of America for decorative or patriotic purposes, either inside or outside of any residence, store, place of business, public building, or school building.

The latest development in the Yellow Dirt Baptist Cemetery saga that began in early October 2011 when a member of the Webb family, whose ancestor, Confederate veteran J. P. Shelnutt, is buried there, reported that Confederate flags placed the graves of Shelnutt and other Confederate veterans had been removed, is an admission by Georgia Power Company spokesperson Mark Williams that Georgia Power does not, as it had believed, own the cemetery.

According to Williams, "After completing a title search and survey, we concluded that there are portions of the property in question that are owned by the Webbs. We will continue to control access to the site, since it is within plant grounds." (In order to build Plant Wansley, property completely surrounding the cemetery was purchased decades ago by Georgia Power.) Previously Georgia Power had justified the removal of the flags on the basis of them being offensive to some of its employees.

After learning that the flags had been removed, members of the Haralson Invincibles, Sons Of Confederate Veteran's Camp #673, replaced the flags. Subsequently these flags were removed and replaced. According to a report in the "Heard County Citizen" after the Invincibles' initial replacement of the flags, Georgia Power spokesperson Konswello Monroe said "Yes, we did remove those flags that were put up October 8, and we will be monitoring. If they are put back up we will remove them once again."

Sons of Confederate Veterans member and historical researcher Earnest Everett Blevins of Villa Rica says that Georgia Power "only recognizes part of the Webbs' issues but none of the other issues raised. They do not apologize, especially after beating their chest quite loudly about how they believe they own and they will control it and what goes on in it. They do not report the names of those responsible for the theft of the first flags, never returned nor paid restitution for, nor the second flags. They do not acknowledge that, despite the fact they have a legal department, they did not know it was illegal to remove grave goods."

Blevins believes that it is “unlikely a quiet admission is going to satisfy all the parties now involved,” all of whom are "citizens of Georgia who wish to see laws on the books enforced. If these laws are not enforced, this type of activity will continue unpunished, if not here, then elsewhere. This is a clear case of violating the laws, which are widely published in the local media, on line, and legal libraries."

At its October 25, 2011 meeting, the Heard County Board of Commissioners discussed the theft of the flags. (The majority of the Plant Wansley property is in Heard County.) Blevins believes that the Heard County sheriff's office "must pursue" this case. However, he says that "the Sheriff's office seems to not want to investigate until some names are given although I and others think that is their job. After all, if someone broke into your house and stole your flags, would they investigate only after you gave them names?"

Confederate flag removed from Caddo Courthouse overnight.

The Flag is Gone!!

The Confederate flag will no longer fly in front of the Caddo Parish Courthouse after the Caddo Commission voted 11-1 Thursday take down the flag and flagpole that flies it.

District 5 Commissioner Joyce Bowman requested the removal.
"I feel great. The parish of Caddo and the city of Shreveport should feel great also," she said. "It's been a long time coming, and it's time for us to move on."

Dear Commander Ken,

Here in the Southland of America, we find ourselves in a planned debacle where we face social and cultural genocide at the expense of our ancestors who dare to make a Stand against tyranny. The Confederate Battle Flag now being crushed into dust, and it's image made by dastards to forever depict evil. And who are aided by the judiciary and Public School System that was established in 1865 to crush the spirit of the Southern people.

The Flag must be gone because sooner or later Southern Black folks are going to figure out that they have been used as the weapon of choice against the only man on God's earth whoever cared about them and a serious path for social vertical mobility for their race of people; the Southern White man. A man that they stood by while earning a place of honor under a flag that is in essence their very own, "the Confederate Battle Flag".

Here in the time of the Sesquicentennial of this tragic and illegal War forced upon the Southern people , and ironically a time in which this nation finds itself trying to heal sectarian and sectional wounds of nations abroad, it looks away from it's very own dirty laundry while terrorizing Southern babies who dare to look upon their ancestors with pride for making an honorable Stand in defense of their homeland, whether they be the freed or indentured African, or one of the Southern American Indian, or the Yang's of the Yellow race , or the Southern White man.

I take off my hat to the Alcoa company in Badin , N.C. who said , just maybe we need to sit down at the Table of Brotherhood and talk about this thing , and they did. Black folks and White folks, brothers native to the Southern soil whose ancestors together earned a place of honor serving under the Southern Cross, reinforcing the love and respect they had forged for each other in lieu of the economic institution of slavery that the whole world was complicit in. No longer duped, they found mutual respect for each other and the shared interest in their flag.

The Principal at Carolina Forest could find the same if he only asked. However, there are so many like him who are so afraid of losing their judicial appointments, their paths of tenure, the nights at the Boy Scout Camp fire, bringing their antique cars to the Veteran Day Parade , until they will let the good name of those whose bones lay dry beneath them unable to defend themselves, vanquish into history shrouded in shame by lies and distortions from those who hate all things Southern. And who continue to use Southern Black folks as their weapon of choice while parading a man call Lincoln as their emancipator, the same one who campaigned on behalf of and and signed the Corwin Amendment that had the Southern White man agreed to would have forever kept them in slavery.

A brief summary of the situation at the Pelham Chapel:

Twenty years after Gen. Robert E. Lee rode into Appomattox and surrendered his tattered army, ending the War Between the States, a memorial chapel was built in Richmond in memory of the 260,000 Confederate soldiers who died during the conflict.. The Pelham Chapel – Confederate War Memorial is designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S., and has been granted the status of Confederate Monument by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The organ in the chapel was donated by a group of Union veterans from Lynn, Mass. One of the contributors to the soldiers' home that surrounded the chapel was Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. And a Union private from Massachusetts donated his annual pension to support the home.

A pair of Confederate flags had flown over the Confederate Memorial Chapel in Richmond since 1887. Those two flags did not trouble the Union soldiers who donated the organ to the chapel; nor did they trouble Ulysses S. Grant. They were placed there by Confederate Veterans, to memorialize the Confederate dead, and honor the living.

Fast forward 150 years…on the eve of the Sesquicentennial Commemoration of the War Between the States, June 1st, 2010, these two Confederate Battle Flags were forcibly removed from the Memorial by a restriction in the lease renewal, at the insistence of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

This is in direct violation of Virginia law, which clearly states: “it shall be unlawful for the authorities of the locality, or any other person or persons, to disturb or interfere with any monuments or memorials so erected, or to prevent its citizens from taking proper measures and exercising proper means for the protection, preservation and care of same. For purposes of this section, "disturb or interfere with" includes removal of, damaging or defacing monuments or memorials, or, in the case of the War Between the States, the placement of Union markings or monuments on previously designated Confederate memorials or the placement of Confederate markings or monuments on previously designated Union memorials.” (§ 15.2-1812)

As citizens of Virginia and descendants of Confederate soldiers who gallantly answered Virginia’s call to defend her, we demand that the VMFA remove these blatantly prejudicial restrictions and allow the Confederate Battle Flags to once again fly on the Confederate War Memorial.

Most all of us are well aware of the MAJOR Heritage Violation that has taken place at Plant Wansley in Heard County earlier this month, and most everyone has heeded the call and have shot off angry communications to people in Plant Wansley, Georgia Power, and Southern Company. This is what caused Ga Power to replace the Flags. -THIS NEEDS TO CONTINUE!

But there comes a time where all we do is reach the same people and they become a blocking filter to all other personel and it keeps exposure to a minimum.

I call upon ALL FLAGGERS, and those angry at the CRIMES that were committed by Ga Power against our Confederate ancestors to pick your targets in the 1st ever Multi-State Flagging. Instead of having Flaggers travel to Plant Wansley gates, who are very much aware of the situation, You have in your local communities a Georgia Power office, an Alabama Power office, or a Mississippi Power office, as well as maintainance barns - all of which fall under the umbrella of Southern Company. (if any are aware of other related businesses, include them)

Travel to one or more of these local places in your community and set up shop.

This will increase the public's as well as employees knowledge (how many real Southerners work for this conglomerate?) and may end up in your local media as well.

To refresh your mind on the events read these links, and make copies of the applicable laws that were violated. Dear folks, I would strongly suggest a dual track approach here.

Besides having individuals contacting them it is imperative that they see some groups and orgs weighing in. And not only local but even statewide and national groups. This really rattles them a lot more. It shows them that you are connected to the community and can deploy support.

If the 'other side' demonstrates this and we don't...well I can kind of give you a hint which way they are going to lean on any areas where they feel they have wiggle room. They will be effected by where they feel they will get the worst PR and look bad in the community. That is the sad state of affairs we are still in.

First up should be all the local vet org chapters, and then the state level, also. Making them aware of these hassles is something we need to see where they stand anyway, and this looks like a good case to test them out on.

The mounting pressures from unrelenting forces finally woke up the "Southern" Company folks that they had not stepped, but jumped head first into a horrible situation by desecrating the final resting places of 7 Confederate Veterans violating numerous Georgia laws, then attempted to cover it up with denial and obfuscation -
at one point attempting to forbid visitors into the cemetery itself.

From the initial response to replacing the original missing 7 Confederate Battle flags on October 8th by the Haralson Invincibles Camp # 673, when called upon by descendants of one of the Confederate Veterans thru the heartbreaking and very damning media reports from Heard Citizen, News-Banner, Times-Journal and Carroll Star alerting us the flags have been removed again on October 12th, right on thru to those who answered the call to arms from such groups as the Sons of Confederate Veterans and people like Tommy PoP Aaron and his blog support, Charles Demastus for his ever diligent Southern Heritage News and Views, the excellent YouTube video by Chad Smith and the Facebook protest page and web support from Susan Hathaway, strong local efforts from Billy Bearden and Ernie Blevins as well as everyone reading this press release who helped make this moment possible

The time is upon those of us who call ourselves Southern to have a gut check and a different plan of action. The one symbol that accurately define us as Southern is the Christian Cross of St. Andrew. Yet our citizenry is beat down for our love for that symbol, and especially the honorable part that the African people played in support of and defense of our new homeland; the Southland of America under that symbol when it was illegally invaded by our brothers from the North land of America.

We as Southerners give of our monies, our votes of public office, our men and women to marriage, and their lives in defense of a country whose academic and judiciary systems continue to attack us with a rhetoric and modus operandi designed in the era of so called Reconstruction to divide Southern Blacks and Southern Whites, as they use the African people as their weapon of choice against the one man in this country (Southern White man) whose role enabled the African people to survive the Barmecide Feast set up by the world against them , as they all participated in the world wide economic institution of African chattel slavery, and now lay that role solely upon the peoples of the Southland of America .

As a man who puts his life literally on the line daily for those dry bones Red, Yellow, Black and White, freed or indentured who lie in graves scattered about these lands called America and who cannot defend their good names and the Honorable Stand they all made for not only their homeland, but also for the Constitutional Republic forged by the Founding Fathers; I now call upon the young Southern boys to turn in their memberships, badges, pins and any other materials belonging to the National Boy Scouts of America who as an organization began it's complicity in the attack of our people by removing the name of the Honorable General Robert E. Lee from it's Council in Richmond, Virginia. And who would further would climb into bed with those who would deny the Sons of Confederate Veterans to march in their Veterans Day parade in Homestead Florida. And I call upon all Southern men to remove themselves from any and all associations with the America Legion Posts worldwide until such time as American Legion Post #2 of Knoxville, Tennessee allows once again the Sons of Confederate Veterans to march with their Colors in the Knoxville, Tennessee Veterans Day parade. And on February 18, 2012, which marks the day that the Honorable President Jefferson Davis would deliver his first Inaugural Address on the steps of the Capitol building in Montgomery, Alabama; I call upon all Southerners to wear or display on their persons the Southern Cross whether it be at school, work or play. IN HER WORDS

For me, it all started with the Save Our Flags Rally in Lexington. Billy was instrumental in helping me get started with an online petition and we worked to spread the word online, mostly through FaceBook. Estimated 300+ attended. Billy and CC Lesters got there early and flagged locations through the town, and stopped in Reidsville to flag the spot where the Confederate Statue was removed on their way home. I came after work and attended the rally…

…and spoke at the Council meeting.

Madame Mayor, Council Members, Lexington residents, and guests. I wish to begin by thanking you for the opportunity to address you all on the subject of the proposed ordinance that would ban the flying of Confederate flags from city light poles in celebration of Lee-Jackson day in Lexington.

My name is Susan Hathaway. I am not a Lexington resident. I drove from Richmond after work today to humbly represent those of us who, although we do not call Lexington home, consider it “our” town, as well. My father brought me here as a child, to pay honor to the memory of two of the greatest Virginians that ever lived. We visited their graves, and he taught my brother, my sister, and I, the importance of honoring our history and remembering the brave men who answered the call of duty in defense of Virginia. Years later, I brought my own children here, as well, aspiring to teach them the same valuable lessons.

I understand that the proposed ordinance is a result of the complaints of approx. 300 people who claimed they were offended by the flags that flew during the week leading up to Lee-Jackson Day this past January. With your permission, I would like to present a petition opposing this ordinance, signed by over 1600 individuals…FIVE times as many as the original petition that led to this ordinance…people like me…potential tourists, eager to visit the final resting place of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. My daughter and I attended the Lee-Jackson Day services in January. We stayed at the Lexington Inn, spent time and money in your shops and enjoyed dining in several local restaurants. By my receipts, we spent over $500, money that went directly into the pockets of Lexington merchants.

I know others have made, and will make the arguments about how ridiculous it is to let the rants of a few misinformed, prejudiced people make policy for a town that owes its very existence to these two men, so I will just say this… Those of us who, without malice toward any race, creed, or nationality, choose to honor our Confederate Ancestors and the sacrifice they made, are no longer willing to sit by quietly and allow their honor and memory to be denigrated!

If this ordinance is passed, I will use my sphere of influence and personally spearhead a boycott of Lexington. We will still gather to honor and celebrate these great men, but I will do everything in my power to make sure that everyone from New York to Florida with any interest in the War Between the States is made aware that the town that once accepted the sacred duty as the honored caretakers of our the final resting places of Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee, now despises the association and does not welcome us or our “tainted” money.

I lost my father a few months ago, after an extended illness. He was an amazing example to me of a Christian gentleman in every aspect of his life, and one of the most important things he taught me was to ALWAYS stand firm for what I know is right. It is in his memory, and the memory of so many others who have gone before him, that I stand before you today and respectfully request that if you came to this meeting determined to cast a vote in favor of this ordinance, that you reconsider, ignore the political pressures that you may be facing, and do the RIGHT thing…speak for those who no longer have a voice, and stand for those long buried, who…at least as long as I have breath,…will NOT be forgotten!

Both experiences were life changing for me…

Top 10 things I learned in Lexington last night…

10) Michael Lucas is a tall drink of water, Kelly Hinson is even prettier in person, Jamie Funkhouser and C.C. Lesters are two of the nicest young men I have met, Billy Bearden is not nearly as vociferous as he claims to be, and if your FB profile pic is over 10 years old, you might want to update it, so we will recognize you!

9) If you are going to be out in public with one of our flags, make it an historical one and educate yourself on what you are carrying and why so when people ask you are ready to answer…politely and accurately.

8) If I’m going to take up this flagging thing, I need to find an outfit with shoulder pads! Battle scars after only a few hours of toting a flag…SHEEEESH!

7) The men of the Lexington Police and Fire are some of the nicest folks I have ever met.

6) The meaning of the word Hegemony: : the social, cultural, ideological, or economic influence exerted by a dominant group…(see Timothy Manning, I did go look it up.)

5) The people of Lexington need a WHOLE LOT of education about the flags of the Confederacy and what they represent.

4) Those who are supposedly on the same side of an issue should get together and make sure their talking points are at least similar. The City attorney spent an awful lot of time explaining how the ordinance was specifically designed to eliminate the possibility of the SCV flying their flags from city light poles, in spite of the fact that the Mayor and City Manager had been telling the press for weeks that the ordinance was NOT specifically designed to ban the Confederate flag from city light poles.

3) NEVER trust a Lexingtonian who starts off their speech by “claiming” their Confederate ancestors…because… mark my words… there is a “BUT” or “HOWEVER” coming pretty soon thereafter…

2) If you are going to be herded into an overcrowded building and have to stand for several hours, packed together like sardines and sweating like a sinner on judgment day, there are no better people to be surrounded by than the ones I was with in Lexington last night.

...and the number one thing I learned...

1) Regardless of how much the deck is stacked against you, how much the outcome is predetermined, or how inconvenient it may seem at the time, it is ALWAYS the right thing to stand up and speak out for what is right.

When I got home, Billy and I continued to talk, e-mail, plan (well, mostly just me bugging the heck out of him with a million questions), and organize, starting with some of those who had attended the rally. Within the week, we had organized a group, Virginia Flaggers, and Brandon Dorsey of the Stonewall Brigade began a weekly flagging of Lexington, each Thursday at Noon.

Last week was the fourth consecutive week and it looks like his numbers are growing each week.

Last Saturday, (October 1st) I finally had everything I needed together and did my first flagging here in Richmond, at the Pelham Chapel/Confederate War Memorial, against the VMFA’s removal of the battle flags off of the portico.

Twenty years after Gen. Robert E. Lee rode into Appomattox and surrendered his tattered army, ending the War Between the States, a memorial chapel was built in Richmond in memory of the 260,000 Confederate soldiers who died during the conflict.. The Pelham Chapel – Confederate War Memorial is designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S., and has been granted the status of Confederate Monument by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The organ in the chapel was donated by a group of Union veterans from Lynn, Mass. One of the contributors to the soldiers' home that surrounded the chapel was Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. And a Union private from Massachusetts donated his annual pension to support the home.

A pair of Confederate flags had flown over the Confederate Memorial Chapel in Richmond since 1887. Those two flags did not trouble the Union soldiers who donated the organ to the chapel; nor did they trouble Ulysses S. Grant. They were placed there by Confederate Veterans, to memorialize the Confederate dead, and honor the living.

Fast forward 150 years…on the eve of the Sesquicentennial Commemoration of the War Between the States, June 1st, 2010, these two Confederate Battle Flags were forcibly removed from the Memorial by a restriction in the lease renewal, at the insistence of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

This is in direct violation of Virginia law, which clearly states: “it shall be unlawful for the authorities of the locality, or any other person or persons, to disturb or interfere with any monuments or memorials so erected, or to prevent its citizens from taking proper measures and exercising proper means for the protection, preservation and care of same. For purposes of this section, "disturb or interfere with" includes removal of, damaging or defacing monuments or memorials, or, in the case of the War Between the States, the placement of Union markings or monuments on previously designated Confederate memorials or the placement of Confederate markings or monuments on previously designated Union memorials.” (§ 15.2-1812)
As citizens of Virginia and descendants of Confederate soldiers who gallantly answered Virginia’s call to defend her, we demand that the VMFA remove these blatantly prejudicial restrictions and allow the Confederate Battle Flags to once again fly on the Confederate War Memorial.

The following Monday (October 3rd) , the group got word that Steven Spielberg was coming to the Executive Mansion and a who’s who of Virginia’s finest was coming to celebrate the Richmond location for the upcoming “Lincoln” movie. We scrambled and had a contingency at the event. Two flagged the perimeter…

Saturday, (October 8th) I went back to the Chapel.

BEAUTIFUL day in the Capital of the Confederacy, as you can see in this pic from earlier this afternoon. It was the only photo I got with my blackberry today, as I was flying solo with no one to take photos. Had many gre...at conversations. Most were receptive to hear what I had to say and many agreed with the point of the protest.

There were a few obscenities screamed... out of car windows or from bike riders (I am learning that the favorite word of the uneducated starts with an F and rhymes with truck), but they were the exception to the rule. Most were friendly waves, honks, or shouts of support.

I gave out about two dozen flyers and spoke with about 25 people total. Best conversation was with a black man who asked to take my picture. We ended up talking in depth about use of flag during civil rights, days, etc… He was pretty defensive to start, but by the end of the convo, took my email and said he would send me pic. The worst was a couple who tried to hurry past. Not going to happen on my watch…I smile and say “good afternoon”. She turns on her heels (never stops walking) and starts shouting “Why are you doing this? You are a creepy (female dog)! The war is over you loser” “I’d love to discuss it with you” I say when she takes a breath. “In your dreams (female dog)” she shouts, jumps in car, slams door and pulls out like bat outta hell. As they pull away, I check the tags on the BMW and it all makes sense…NEW YORK!

Other highlights are the kids…when they walk up and ask about the flag, I don’t go into all the details, just tell them “because my Great-Great Grandaddy was a soldier and fought for this flag and for Virginia and I am very proud of him”. “Cool!” they usually shout (or something like that) and run off.

For the last several days, Mr. Beters has been pestering me for an explanation of why I am a flagger. Walking and talking today, I realized that although I could write a three page essay on the subject, I can sum it up best this way…

As the direct descendant of 4 Confederate Soldiers, I feel it is my duty to speak for those who do not have a voice, my honor to stand up for those long buried who cannot defend themselves, and I truly believe that God has placed me in this moment and given me the knowledge, gifts, talents and courage that allow a chance to make a difference…for such a time as this.

That’s where you find us. Thanks to Billy's encouragement, mentorship and inspiration, we currently have 15 people in the “group.” …and I am confident that as word spreads, more people will join.

The above video is a good representation of the war crimes committed by Kansas Jayhawkers in Osceola, Missouri in September, 1861. The City Council of Osceola, Missouri recently decided to make a bold and unusual stand by passing a resolution that asked the university of Kansas to drop its “Jayhawk” mascot because it represents the act of domestic terrorism committed by Senator Jim Lane’s “Jayhawks”. The resolution is unusual in a sense that it is not often that a City Council takes a stand for TRUTH.

Heritage Alert: Oakwood Cemetery Richmond VA

Here's your opportunity to speak for your Confederate ancestor as an active member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans! I would like for you to please take a half hour or so and write a letter. A short letter is fine.

The current federal administration is unwilling to help us (the SCV) to mark the 17,000 Confederate graves in Richmond, Virginia - and that is wrong! Our ancestors deserve the recognition and respect of a simple headstone. And up until recently, the Veterans Administration recognized the Confederate soldier, sailor and Marine as a veteran and provided headstones for them. Not anymore!

Please, and I don't ask this very often, write a letter or note and mail it to three people. SCV GHQ tells you how below.

This will be the best use of three Yankee stamps you have probably made in a long time! Your letter doesn't have to be fancy, well-written or official sounding. Just let them know your thoughts on the matter! Don't let them win in their attempt to eliminate of our heritage. Let them know how you want your tax dollars spent!

STAND UP FOR OAKWOOD CEMETERY CONFEDERATES

PROBLEM: Oakwood Cemetery's 17,000 Confederates, representing 13 Confederate states, deserve the dignity of an upright marker bearing their name. Currently, a small, nameless block, bearing only a three digit number represents the final resting place of three or more soldiers. The US Veterans Administration has been uncooperative in delivery of the upright markers.

ACTION REQUIRED: Send a letter to all three of your Congressmen (two Senators and House member):

* Website, http://www.contactingthecongress.org, can be utilized - just plug in your address. Remember, letters are more effective than e-mail. Calls are helpful, also.

* Talking points (put these in your own words in your letter to your Congressmen) -

1] In 1958, Congress pardoned Confederate soldiers and extended benefits therewith (US Code Title 38, Sec. 2306). This includes headstones for unmarked graves.

2] These men deserve the dignity of a marker bearing their name - to not do so is the final human rights violation.

3] The Veterans Administration should be required to live up to its responsibility, obey the law and provide these markers.

4] Sen. Jim Webb (VA) is already engaged in this issue - ask your Congressmen to contact him and support his efforts.

5] Contact other Confederate heritage advocates (UDC, re-enactors, etc.), as well as SAR, DAR and those in veterans organizations (VFW, American Legion, Wounded Warriors, etc.) and involve them in this process.

THIS IS THE LARGEST AND MOST SIGNIFICANT INITIATIVE OF THIS KIND EVER UNDERTAKEN BY THE SCV. THIS WAS ENDORSED AND ANNOUNCED BY CIC GIVENS DURING OUR REUNION, JULY 16, 2011 in MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA.

The boy (he's local) is hopelessly confused and may have been dropped on his head or exposed to radiation at an early age. He seems to think that "Southern" and "Mountain" are two mutually exclusive things. At any rate, he doesn't want to be tainted by the "Southern" label and thinks Asheville has "outgrown" its Southern-ness. He apparently belongs to that unfortunate class of Southerner who feels that the only proper way to refer to his heritage is either by ridicule or apology. (Note the crack about trailers and Confederate flags.)

Back story: Sandford calls his column "Ashevegas". He apparently thinks this is cute and that it identifies him with the "happening" Asheville of brew pubs, sushi bars, avant-garde theatre, bad poetry and street parties honoring every ethnic group imaginable (except Southerners).

Interestingly, a good many people have objected to the "Ashevegas" title on grounds they consider Las Vegas tawdry, flashy, self-indulgent and shallow, and they resent the comparison. Nevertheless, he keeps right on writing his silliness and the C-T keeps publishing it.

Let's see if we can help straighten the young man out. It's the least we can do.

Regarding the 150th anniversary of the creation of Cobbs Legion, Company 'B' Bowdon Volunteers:

I have not heard back from any of the numerous messages I have sent to y'all, and am very curious why not.

It is a solemn yet proud moment in Bowdon's history, and I was so looking forward to y'all's taking the lead in marking this event, as is your mission. I understand it is Confederate History, and some people are ashamed of those roots.

I would just like to report to y'all that on July 27th, 2011 I was over at the BAHS building in hopes y'all had something going on to pay tribute to Bowdon's Confederate Veterans. Sadly though, the gate was locked, noone was around, and there was NOT EVEN A CONFEDERATE FLAG on the pole out back over the graves ! I took a picture of the sadly empty flag pole.

So, beginning at 11:00 am, I marched in my Confederate Uniform carrying a 1st National Confederate Flag - that I had brought for honoring that special day - from the front gate of BAHS thru the BHS parking lot down the sidewalk thru town till I got to the little city park across from Wendys.

I stood there waving to traffic, posed for pictures, and talked many curious passersby. I told them of the historical significance of the date, and got many thumbs up and thanks.

One person actually asked me if some display would be set up at the BAHS or a reenactment in Bowdon, but I told them I doubted it, that I had been sending emails and info to BAHS about it and never got a reply.

I stood there in my wool uniform in the 90 degree heat until my water ran out and left at approx 1:30pm.

Hopefully tomorrow, August 6th, 2011, the BAHS will have some parade entry or programme info to acknowledge the Bowdon Volunteers to the local community.

Confederate Statue Rebuilding Debate

The marble statue was knocked off its pedestal on West Morehead Street and North Scales Street on May 23 after a van missed a traffic circle and crashed right into it. The driver of the van will be paying for the damage to the state through his insurance.

"Every time I would come back to the city, I would always see the solider. It would remind me of my relatives and my kin people that were hung in trees," said Judy Odds, who is against rebuilding the statue.

Lee Headquarters flags, and 2nd National (stainless banner) flags for Lee-Jackson Day. A small vocal group is attempting to have the city enact a policy to prohibit the displays in the future. Discrimination In Plans To Celebrate Confederate Statue

The group Sons and Daughters of the Confederacy on Tuesday evening is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the statue’s unveiling, but representatives from the group said city officials made planning the event difficult.

Group spokesman Jerry Hobbs said at first the city welcomed the celebration with open arms, but later ruled out any march in the streets and are not allowing guns to be fired in honor of those killed in the war. Hobbs said the city finally pulled out of the event entirely.

Hobbs said he feels the city is discriminating against the group.

Folks,

I have information from a very good patriot friend of mine in Southern California that Confederate Memorial services and the placement of Confederate flags on the graves of our ancestors in Hollywood Forever Cemetery have been banned by the authorities there. For two years Confederate patriots in that area have been trying to get the ban on the placement of our flags lifted. Now this... a complete ban on services of any kind, with or without Confederate flags, for our ancestors buried there. I know that the Southern California area is not exactly what you would call Confederate friendly territory, but, folks, this is an outrage! Confederate patriots in this area are livid about this, but, given the obstinate position of the authorities at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, there is little they can do about it. That is why I am asking for your help in this matter. Below I have given the full contact information for Hollywood Forever Cemetery. I urge all Confederate patriots, worthy of the name, to please call or email the cemetery authorities there and give them your piece of mind on this outrage that they have committed. It may not bring our flags back or even restore the right to honor our Confederate dead there, but at least we can burn their ears off and flood their email with our complaints. If we all unite on this, we can at least show them the magnitude of the consequences of their actions. Our Confederate ancestors buried there deserve at least that much.

We in the North put down these traitors, and we should be every bit as proud of it as we are that we put down the Nazis – and for pretty much the same reasons. We certainly could have handled our racism better, but then we certainly could have handled our anti-Semitism better before, during, and after WWII as well. But this is Confederate History Month. State Senator Lowell Barron is not allowing SB233 to come to the floor for a vote. Demand, by calling NOW, demand that this issue be brought to the floor so that the voters of Alabama can have an up or down vote!

SB233 would propose an amendment to the Constitution of Alabama of 1901 to prohibit any person, employer, or health care provider from being compelled to participate in any health care system. It reads in part:

PROPOSED AMENDMENT

(a) In order to preserve the freedom of all residents of Alabama to provide for their own health care, a law or rule shall not compel, directly or indirectly, any person, employer, or health care provider to participate in any health care system.

A compatriot and collector in my brigade was robbed. Many items, particularly antique firearms, were stolen from his home. Dixie Outfitters has sent emails to the parties involved, sent free protest bumper stickers to these concerned parents and supplied contact information of support organizations. If your emails, letters and calls do not change the minds of the school administrators we are prepared to support marches, protests/rallies and engage the media to end this blatant discrimination against our Southern children.

Dear Mr. Dewey Barber,

My name is Terri Sneed and I am writing this letter in regards to a meeting that JoAnne Justice and myself held on 8/28/09 at Hawthorne Jr./Sr. High School in Hawthorne Florida.

The morning of 8/28/09 I received a phone call from Hawthorne Jr./Sr. High School. They called to inform me that my children needed to be picked up or that I was to bring a change of clothes to them so they could continue their day at school. Due to the fact that my children have nothing that is not permitted in our dress code, I immediately asked what they wore to school that was not appropriate for our schools attire. Libby Hartwell (V.P.) informed me that the shirts my son has been wearing for 6 years was not appropriate attire and the same for my daughter that has been wearing hers just as long. That same morning I find out that JoAnne Justice has also been called to pick up her child that has also been wearing the same shirts for many years. Much to our surprise we find out that many other children have been forced to remove their shirts, to turn them inside out or to be sent home if they had these shirts on. We are totally appalled at what is taking place. Can they take from us our heritage?
This is who we are!!!! The confederate flag has been in our home-town and our school for as many years as I can remember.

When we meet with the principal-Veita Jackson Carter, M.E.D- P, Vice
Principal-Libby Hartwell and the Dean-Laura Green I specifically asked them all
if there has ever been an issue, fight or controversy over these shirts being worn. The answer was NO.

We live in a small town where these children black and white have grown up together from Pre-K to 12th grade. Everyone knows everyone and NEVER has there been an issue with the confederate flag. When I asked WHY these children could no longer where their shirts their only response was that it offended them. Not that it offended the children but it offended them.

Politely they were handed the information that you made available to us. We figured that since they were new to our school that maybe they were ignorant to what the confederate flag stands for. So I asked that the information be read aloud so everyone could get a "Short History Lesson". They informed us after reading the article that their minds were made up and that they rule the school. Last to my knowledge we pay their salary and the History books can not be changed.

Personally, I think it is a true sign of ignorance as to what the confederate flag stands for. It truly disturbs me to think that there is one person that can change the life style of many. Taking from our children who they are and what they stand for. Proud to live in the south, black and white. In our town it has never been a racial thing and my question is why make it one now?

I hope that there is something that maybe you can do to stand behind us as parents that mean no harm to anyone but wanting to stand up for the rights of our children and what they believe in. Thank you for your time and hope to hear from you soon.

SLRC PUTS QUESTION TO SLAVERY RESOLUTION SPONSORS:
WILL CONGRESS APOLOGIZE FOR YANKEE WAR CRIMES?

BLACK MOUNTAIN, NC - The Southern Legal Resource Center today began contacting members of the House of Representatives who co-sponsored the recently passed resolution apologizing for Slavery and Jim Crow, asking whether they would consider a similar apology -- and possible reparations -- for the descendants of Southerners who were victims of Union war crimes during the War Between the States.

First of the resolution's 120 co-sponsors to be contacted by the SLRC was Heath Shuler, a freshman Democrat representing North Carolina's Eleventh District. The SLRC hand delivered the following letter to Shuler's Asheville, N.C., office:

Dear Congressman Shuler:

Last week the House of Representatives passed H.R. 194, a resolution of which you were among the co-sponsors. This resolution was an official Congressional apology for chattel slavery as practiced in the North American colonies and later in the United States, and also for the system of so-called Jim Crow laws which obtained thereafter until the middle of the Twentieth Century.
Since the passage of this resolution the Southern Legal Resource Center has received telephone calls, e-mails and letters from many Southerners, including constituents of yours, asking us to put the following questions to you and your fellow co-sponsors:

1. Are you willing at this time to introduce a similar resolution apologizing for war crimes and depredations that were endorsed by the United States government and carried out as a matter of policy by United States troops against the defenseless civilian population of the South during the years 1861-65?

2. As an extension of such an apology, are you willing to introduce, or would you be willing to endorse, a system of reparations to the descendants of Southerners who suffered loss of life and/or the wanton destruction of their homes, crops and means of livelihood, as well as theft and vandalism of their personal property and wholesale rape, assault and degradation?

These are not rhetorical questions. They are put to you in good faith and in the expectation of your prompt and forthright response. Thank you in advance for your attention.

Within a couple of days the Florida Division, SCV will be meeting with Tampa Tourism and Business leaders about the "Giant Confederate Flag" we will be raising in Tampa on a permanent basis.
As nothing could persuade us not to fly the flag, local leaders will have two choices: To work with the SCV to create a "positive spin" and use the flag to generate tourism, or take
the "Chicken Little - The Sky is Falling" approach, brand the flag as racist, and hope it doesn't affect tourism.

The SCV would like to show the tourism industry that our flag will bring visitors to the area, who will contribute to the economy. To that end, we are asking you all to email or call the Tampa Bay Convention and Visitors' Bureau, and ask the following:

Dear Sirs,

My Family and I are planning a trip to the Tampa area (next year, whenever) and one thing we hope to do is visit the big Confederate flag site, and memorial park. We would like for you to send us information on
hotels, and other attractions in the area.

Use your real mailing address, indicate how many in your party. All you will get is a nice packet and letter.

You can also call them on the phone and ask about the flag, when it's supposed to be flying, and where to stay nearby when it gets dedicated next year. FYI, We expect as many as 5,000 for that dedication, and we will address getting hotel blocks this fall. Tell them friends sent you news reports, or you saw it on television and are planning your family vacation around the dedication ceremony. Better yet, tell them you are coming for the 2009 Superbowl in Tampa, and want to stay out close to the flag site.

Just try to be somewhat original, mix up your tourism questions a bit, and be sure to indicate that the flag is a big reason you will be headed to the Tampa Bay area with your family.

The hopeful result of this effort will be a "bewildered and puzzled" Visitors Bureau when we have our meeting with them. If they see this flag as potentially positive for the area, they won't know what to do with themselves. Remember, the political mavens may hate the flag, but they are guided and funded by the business leaders - let one faction drive the other, so to speak.

As you are aware, the Florida Division's giant flag-raising in Tampa
has generated a lot of interest in the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Following the first flag raising, we have received 17 straight days
of national news coverage, including 6 national market radio talk
show interviews, about 12 television reports on local stations and
national TV coverage on ABC, CNN and FOX. ABC News, NY was the
first national media outlet to break the story. Nearly every newspaper
from Miami to Chicago has printed multiple stories on the project.

Even a newspaper in Poland called for an interview. For at least a week,
talk radio shows across the country were weighing in on this issue. We
were recently informed by the media, that the Tampa Flags Across Florida
project will be a major issue in the Presidential Elections, as
candidates will be asked about it when they campaign in Florida.

A reporter for FOX NEWS Miami, named Orlando Salinas came to Tampa
and did a story about the flag, the SCV and the "alleged controversy".
His report was not only fair and balanced, it probably could be described
as "pro-Confederate".

Mr. Salinas is a "Shenandoah Valley" native with sympathies towards our
Cause. His video report included an opening sequence showing African
Americans and SCV members raising our flag in Tampa on Flag Day. It
includes interviews with several African American supporters, including
SCV compatriot Nelson Winbush. Mr. Salinas interviewed both sides of
this issue, but his report questions the common notion that the flag is
simply racist. Salinas made a special effort to report the
TRUTH ABOUT THE FLAG.

Salinas' piece was to have run tonight on FOX NEWS as a special story
on Britt Hume's 6-7pm EST segment. It now appears that FOX management
in New York is afraid to run this story, and intend to let it die.
It seems that TRUTH and FAIRNESS make the producers "uneasy". We were
told that one FOX NEWS director actually insisted that any story had to
paint the flag as "racist".

The sign with the portrait of the Confederate leader was found Wednesday stuck in a log jam.

THE NEW WAY OF DISPLAYING OUR FLAG

Dear Editor,

On the front page of the June 9th edition of the Tallapoosa Journal is an uncredited photo of the results of an alleged meth-lab bust. Certainly we citizens are much appreciative of the efforts of law enforcement in rounding up criminals and keeping our communities safe, and kudos to the Tallapoosa PD for doing their job.

Unfortunately, those involved in photographing those items obviously displayed very poor judgment by dishonoring our Veterans by, for whatever reason, using an Honorable Symbol as a place mat. Simply putting the Confederate flag that 300,000 men died fighting for and under on the ground to defile it is bad enough, but to contemptuously disrespect that same symbol of our ancestors by placing drug paraphernalia on it is to spit on it. There is absolutely no connection between illicit drugs and Confederate Veteran's Battleflags. United States Law declares Confederate Veterans are United States Veterans, and this takes place just after Memorial Day.

Perhaps the reporter thought it was somehow funny? Maybe the photographer has a leftist agenda? We know there are those in local leadership positions who are actively seeking to phase out the Honorable Banner from our great High School, and this kind of blatant abuse clearly plays to that effort. I would ask why is the photographer unnamed, and what would the public say had the backdrop been the United States Flag instead. Shame on them, and for the Tallapoosa Journal for printing such a disrespectful picture.

As such, I believe the person(s) guilty of dishonoring the Confederate Flag in this manner surely has violated Georgia law, and would strongly encourage the Tallapoosa Police Dept to investigate this most serious issue. Certainly if one media cameraman can be arrested for anti flag activities a few years ago, another can be held to the same standard.

That myth has been around since Jeff Davis, the ex-rebel president, penned his tedious, self-righteous memoir, "The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government," in 1881. Lost-cause historians have fostered the image of Davis as the doomed champion of a nation that valued the rights of its citizens too much to create the military state necessary to effectively resist the tyrant Lincoln. The Union president had no such qualms; he suspended habeas corpus and jailed the occasional opposition leader in order to win the war.

Methodists call for Confederate flag removal

The S.C. Conference of the United Methodist Church passed a resolution late Wednesday calling for removal of the Confederate flag from the State House grounds. The resolution passed by a narrow margin after a short discussion, said Matt Brodie, communications director for the annual conference.

Three pastors, including the Rev. John Culp of Columbia’s Virginia Wingard UMC, introduced the resolution. In May, Culp led pastors and lay people in prayer at the Capitol to draw attention to what they see as a symbol of divisiveness.

I was just wondering if you could possibly post this:

The other week at school I had gone up to the front office at my school because I was checking out. My older brother was on his way to pick me up. Well a couple months before that in March was my birthday and I got some Confederate flag jewelry. I had 2 necklaces, one bracelet, and earrings. Well the lady in the front office was black and racist. (not to mention that she didn't like me anyways) She told me to remove my jewelry and put it in my pocket, I had asked her why and she said because it was against school rules and she also did not like it. I calmly told her that it was not a racist symbol and she should not feel that way about it. She did not like this and told me if I did not take off my jewelry "right now" she was going to call the deputy on me. I took it off and went to put it in my pocket like she said to and she told me that she was going to confiscate my jewelry and I was to not have it back until my brother got there. She took all my jewelry and put in in an envelope. I have reason to believe that she as just after me because I was already checked out of school and the "unwritten" policy says if you are checked out there is nothing they can do or say about what you wear. So she had no reason to take my things away from me. This is why I believe she was just after me. I had already called my mother by this time. My mom had called the school and asked the lady why she had taken my things from me and she said it was against school rules and she was offended by it. She hung up the phone on my mother and looked at me and said "Next time Katelynn make sure you tell her the whole truth instead of what you wanted to tell her." I told her that I did tell her the truth and that she was the one that was lying to my mom. By this time I was not a happy camper. I called my brother off of my cell phone and told him what was going on. He was mad, yelling, screaming, cussing, thank God I put my phone on silent!!! I got off the phone with him and my mom had called me back. As I was talking to her the office became full of students. Well the lady decides to yell at me telling me since I'm still on school grounds I'm not allowed to be on my phone. I couldn't even tell my mom that I had to go; she made me hang up on my mom and turn off my phone!! A black girl had walked in the office and started talking on her phone and the lady didn't say one word to her. So I decided to turn my phone back on and call my mom. She did not like this and told me to turn it off and I told her that if this girl can talk on hers then I'm going to talk on mine. Just then my brother had got to the school. I asked her for my jewelry and she handed me my things. But, before she did that she made me point out who my brother was. Well when I did she got even madder. You see my brother drives a Ford Ranger with a 3" lift on it. On the back window he has the American flag fading into a Confederate flag. He stepped out of the truck and he was wearing Wranglers and boots (like always). He also always wears a camo and Confederate hat. Yeah she didn't like that. In the end I did get my things back. But every time I would go up to the office for something she would walk away and have some one else take care of me. I would like to do something about this but its summer now so I don't know if there is much I can do now. I just wanted to let everyone know how screwed up Lake County schools are. NEVER SEND YOUR CHILD TO ANY OF THESE SCHOOLS!!! Unless you want an unfair education.

The lady's name that did this to me is a office worker Mrs. Daniellle Arnold, at Eustis High School. The number is 352-357-4147. Not sure if any one wants it or not but if you do there it is.

Folks, our comrades in Nawth Carolina need ALL of us NOW! Please read below: It seems that the SCV National Heritage Defense Committee has become a stumbling block in our fight against NasCar's anti-Southern stance. Flags & Flyovers cost money...as you can see, IHQ is NOT giving financial support. When the Heritage Defense Committee stands in the way of heritage defense, our battle is lost before it even begins!

Since when are we supposed to dance to the beat of the splc 's drum? Furthermore, being fearful of what the splc thinks or writes does not fly....Kirk Lyons is constantly being purported by the splc to be linked to the Aryan Nation...does this keep the SCV from supporting Kirk? Censuring these hard working Nawth Carolina compatriots from the protest is absurd. It appears that the SCV is now supporting the very things that our Confederate ancestors fought against!

There is no organized support for this important protest at Charlotte. We need to rally behind the soldiers in Nawth Carolina and send donations to finance this effort. Please send your checks made payable to:

STATEMENT OF NORTH CAROLINA DIVISION COMMANDER

Review

Because there have been questions raised about the participation of the North Carolina Division SCV at the upcoming May 26th NASCAR race at Charlotte, as Division Commander I believe it is necessary to publicly state the facts.

SCV Chief of Heritage Defense Darryl Starnes has stated that on about March 10, 2007 he emailed me to inform me that the Heritage Defense Committee had selected the May 26th race at Charlotte to be one of the targeted races for an SCV funded NASCAR protest. I check my email daily, usually twice a day, and I have no record of such an email. Nevertheless, I will not dispute Compatriot Starnes’ story.

On April 3rd, James Younger Camp Commander Eddie McRae emailed me, asking if I had heard anything from Starnes. This email included an exchange between Commander McRae and ANV Commander Michael Givens that informed Commander McRae that since Starnes had not received a reply from me, the decision had been made to forgo a Heritage Defense Committee sponsorship of a protest in North Carolina and to withhold all I.H.Q. funds for the Charlotte race event.

During the last week of March, Steve Poteat, Southern Piedmont Brigade Commander, called me. He was very upset at this denial and implored me to intervene to possibly get this decision reversed. Shortly thereafter ANV Commander Michael Givens called me and urged me to call Starnes and ask him to reconsider his decision. Commander Givens indicated that Starnes was a reasonable man and an agreeable resolution should be possible. I placed a call to Starnes and left a message for him to call me on the NC Division toll free line. During Easter weekend, Commander Poteat called again and asked if I had learned anything. I told him that it was a holiday period, and I would try again soon.

On Easter Monday, I reached Chief of Heritage Defense Starnes by telephone. I apologized for the email mix-up and assured him that we had men who had spent money for camper spaces and were prepared to spend several days during race week passing out flags and protesting NASCAR’s anti-Confederate stance.

Mr. Starnes expressed reservations about participation of men from the James Younger camp. He brought up last year’s protest and the attention given to the controversial tee shirt worn by Compatriot Donnie Hatley. I told Mr. Starnes that I had talked to Compatriot Hatley a number of weeks previously and was assured that the tee shirt would never again see the light of day. He also said that “biker attire” was not proper and that he feared that the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) would find out about the protest and create trouble for the SCV. Mr. Starnes said that it was too late for him to reconsider his decision and the Charlotte race would not receive Heritage Defense Committee resources. I protested strongly, saying that the James Younger Camp and the Southern Piedmont Brigade had everything under control and only needed the flags and funds for a flyover. Mr. Starnes said that the SCV could not take the chance that the SPLC might find out that the same men who manned the protest of 2006 were a part of an official SCV event. The conversation closed with Mr. Starnes stating that his decision would not be reversed.

Given my stated protest, on Thursday, April 12th I was included in a specially-summoned, conference call meeting with the SCV General Executive Council (GEC). The conference call was held in executive session, so I shall not discuss the conversation, even though, apparently, others have publicly revealed details of that meeting.

On Friday, April 13th, ANV Commander Michael Givens called me to say that the G.E.C. had authorized the funds for the Charlotte race protest, but only if Southern Piedmont Brigade Commander Steve Poteat, James Younger Camp Commander Eddie McRae, James Younger Camp Lt. Commander Donnie Hatley, and Northern Piedmont Brigade Commander Jim McManus were not allowed on site. I rejected these conditions as unreasonable and unacceptable. Commander Givens said that, in his opinion, I was allowing four men to stand in the way of the other 3,200 men of the N.C. Division. I firmly disagree and believe that it is the G.E.C. that is inhibiting the legitimate protest by our Division by attaching unrealistic conditions and purse strings to its support of the Charlotte protest.

On Saturday, April 14th, I informed Commanders Poteat and McRae of the General Executive Council ruling.

On Monday, April 16th, ANV Commander Michael Givens called me and stated that he had been in contact with Commander McRae and had convinced him to stand down from the protest. I then contacted Commander McRae for verification. Commander McRae verified Commander Givens’ statement. He added that Commander Givens had promised that the N.C. division would receive the support of the Heritage Defense Committee and that all camps and individuals would be reimbursed for money spent.

But in a subsequent call, Commander McRae said that he had, once again, spoken with Commander Givens and his offer not to participate in the Charlotte event had been withdrawn.

SUMMARY

Some may feel that I am the stumbling block in this effort. While it is true that I rejected the G.E.C.’s offered “compromise,” I feel that my decision was completely justified.

Compatriots Poteat, McRae and Hatley have worked tirelessly to make this protest happen. I have emails that prove that Compatriot Grayson Jennings was in touch with Commander McRae as early as last November about arrangements and nothing at all was said about biker attire being unacceptable at the race or about any problem with the James Younger Camp.

Given the dedication and many efforts of Commander Poteat, Commander McRae, and the members of the James Younger Camp, I could never consider asking these men to abandon the field after all their hard work and preparation. So, I am comfortable with my decision.

The matter of the G.E.C. withholding these funds is analogous to the federal government withholding highway funds until the states enact seat belt laws. I am convinced that the men of the North Carolina division believe in states’ rights even if, sadly, in this case we are at odds with our own International Headquarters.

I plan to be on site myself at the Charlotte race protest and stand with the men whose character has been questioned by the leaders of the very organization they love dearly. I will also ask my camp to appropriate funds to make sure this protest is successful.

There is apparently much talk circulating about this matter. That it why I set down this sequence of events, conversations, and proposals, about which, as North Carolina Division Commander, I have first-hand knowledge

Missouri ALERT!

HCR-26, Bill to make Missouri Apologize for Slavery
HB-495 , Bill to create Missouri Park Board (that could restore flags)

I have just received an important piece of information from a contact in Southeast Missouri.

Both HCR-26 and HB-495 will go before the House Rules tomorrow. HCR-26 is the slavery apology bill that was sponsored by Rep. Talibdin El-Amin (D) St. Louis.

HB-495 is a bill sponsored by Rep. Mike McGhee (R)-Oddessa ,that would create a Missouri Parks Board that would determine and have the power to restore The Confederate Battle Flag at Higginsville Confederate Cemetery and the Second National Confederate Flag at Fort Davidson State Historic Site in Pilot Knob, Missouri. (The flags were taken down by Democratic Governor Bob Holden in Jan. 2003).

When a bill goes to the House Rules, it is either sent back to committee or it receives a Calendar date so that it can be voted on by the Missouri House of Representatives.

It is most important that you call House Speaker Rod Jetton and say "NO!" to HCR-26 , NO! to slavery apologies. No! to crimes we are not guilty of.
It is also important to call House Speaker Jetton and say "YES!" to the restoration of Missouri History by restoring our flags.

Both of these actions will help stop the Politically-Correct revolution that is being used to subvert , coerce and infiltrate our State Government.

Greetings Southern Ladies and Gentlemen -- I would appreciate it so much if you would forward this along to one and all. This is a lovely man who supports our Cause 100%. His situation is critical and he could use even just $1 from everyone we touch with an e-mail. (Yes, he is African-American, and yes his ancestors fought for the Confederacy!)

Rev. Walker being welcomed as an associate member of Wm. B. Bate Camp 34 in Gallatin, TN.

Reverend Early Walker, an associate member of the William B. Bate Camp 34 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans was seriously injured in an auto accident on U.S. Highway 231 near Bethpage in which his daughter, LaToya, was killed on December 23, 2006.

Reverend Walker remains in assisted living following the accident and a subsequent heart attack and stroke and continues to be in our prayers.

In addition to his activities with the Bate Camp, Reverend Walker is a First Lieutenant in the National Defense Force and a Confederate re-enactor with the Porter Battery.

His ancestors bravely fought for the Confederacy having enlisted in Macon County, Tennessee.

Due to this accident, the family suffers serious financial problems and contributions would be greatly appreciated. The William B. Bate Camp has contributed $500 toward these expenses which include unpaid funeral expenses for Reverend Walker's daughter.

Additional contributions can be made to the LaToya Walker Fund at Regions Bank.
